If you want the French version, then you can download it HERE GOOGLE DRIVE. "Against the Wendigo is my first custom stand alone scenario for Arkham Horror TCG. I translated it to from french to english with the help of 2 awesome proofreaders, Stephen W "St Cretin" and Matt A."bakunin888". This scenario is a sequel to the Call Of Cthulhu RPG add-on "Alone Against the Wendigo", a solo adventure written by Glenn Rahman, edited by Chaosium. Several months after the outcome of the original adventure, you explore the wild Hanninah Valley in Canada's far Northwest, looking for the missing students of Dr Nadelmann's expedition. It is not necessary to know the original story to play this scenario. However, be forewarned that the North Hanninah valley is a wild and dangerous territory, from which many explorers have never returned... You only need player cards from a core game box in order to play this 71 cards scenario (+1 cover card), no need for official encounters cards. Please note that the scenario comes with a FFG-style campaign guide for special rules, setup and resolutions, you will need it in order to play. *You can play it as a stand alone scenario, or as an additional adventure in campaign mode for 2xp per investigator. "

Unbelievable----What a experience we had. Very well done, the scenario locations fits perfectly to the storytelling. We will play it again. We could have done more for investigating the case but the time of play was a bit longer than we expected, 4 hours and we decided to leave the scenario, otherwise we finished it very well but we left some experience points. Many Thanks to Vinn Quest for making this possible.

Reply

Vinn Quest · 2019-04-09

Hi ruby ! To answer your question without spoiling anything: some times there is no b side on agenda or act card in a scenario (scenario #2 of the core box for instance). If there is something else you resolve the revelation effect and just continue with the next agenda or act card. And every thing you have in my scenario is supposed to be here... Well at least what you have on b sides ;-) I hope this answer you question, else feel free to contact me, i left my mail somewhere in a previous reply. Have fun !

Played last night with four x zero experience investigators as a standalone scenario. Took 4 hours.

Great use of theme and the game engine. Neat to see the card layout applied to wide open spaces, and the feel of the Canadian Rockies was good.

Great story - both the setup story for the original expedition, and the story that unfolded as we played - the guides and their families, the RCMP and their response, and the terrain and weather. The mist rolling through the valley, and the fickle nature of the river were well-done.

Beautiful card design - evocative art that felt right for the game. We could tell you spent a lot of time and effort on this.

Good game balance - a few of the tests on encounter cards surprised us with their difficulty, but then there were also cards that were neutral or even helpful. Very good use of the encounter deck as more than just all of the bad things you could think of.

We had a couple of questions that should not be spoilers.

  1. Do guides occupy an Ally slot? They are not marked with the Ally symbol.

  2. What is the significance of the 'River' keyword? It was applied by a few cards, but we did not see any effect.

  3. On the 'Rapids' card, the instructions say to move it to a River location to the East or West - we assumed you meant North or South.

  4. One of the enemies that shows up late ('Bestial Creature' is not much of a spoiler) is not marked as 'Elite' but probably should be, since it was Massive and had bonus health.

  5. Finally, a mild spoiler. In one of the 'Sylvia's Fate' cards, the front side gives the investigators a situation where they are apparently captives to some beings, then on the reverse, no mention is made of any difficulty in escaping from them - it seems that the investigators could just move away with no problem. Is this correct.

  6. Another spoiler - the enemy generated by the #5 situation has both 'Aloof' and 'Hunter', and special rules for how to engage and evade it. After some discussion, we realized what you were doing, and we thought it was brilliant. It follows you, gradually wearing down your sanity, and getting rid of it is extremely costly and difficult. We loved it.

Overall, I say bravo.

If you would prefer to email me answers to the questions noted above, I answer at chris_poor@hotmail.com

Thanks again for the hard work

Hello Chris, and thanks for your cool review !

I did spend a lot of time and consideration on illustrations' choices, i'm happy that the final result was worth it :-)

Spoiler-free answers for your questions :

1 . Guide-traited ally don't have an ally symbol, and so don't take an ally slot. It's an implicit rule i've noticed from official scenarios: an ally you encounter in a scenario don't have an ally symbol, unless this ally is supposed to be added in your deck at the end of the scenario, being playable in the next scenarios of a campaign, and thus taking an ally slot.

  1. This question is often asked by players, so i'll probably make a F.A.Q section on the scenario guide to explain this effect. The River keyword is on some encounter cards, "Rapid" for instance, so you can trigger the reaction effect of your Sarcee Guide (+1 combat and +1 agility) on the skill test triggered by those River traited cards.

Conception note : it was my attempt to make the Guide help you greatly on location (North hanninah river) and circumstances (River traited card effects) he's accustom to, but not on other location/encounter events.

  1. Well, after countless proofreanding sessions and playtesting, there still are errors like this one.... thanks for the input, i'll fix it in the next version of the scenario.

  2. This ennemy is not Elite, because i felt that there should be only one Elite ennemy in this scenario, and the "Creature" is just one of it's offspring... it's mainly a personal "conceptual" choice. It's also for balance purpose i made this choice: it can be quite tought to handle, but you can still use all your player card's effects against it.

  3. It's a good observation, and in order to anwser you i need to spoil a little as well both the original story and this scenario's story: in the original story (alone against the wendigo) the investigator could encounter the small-people village, with a witch who attempts to take control of your body by crushing you mind if you're a woman, or sylvia's mind if you're a man. In fact, the witch doesn't wants the small-people to damage a potentialy new body, so they would never harmed you. If you manage to push back and crush the witch's mind instead, the small-people fly.

I tried to adapt this encounter but it's hard to get every thing explained on cards. In particular when you defeat an ennemy, and that ennemy's dead don't trigger an act or agenda to advance, explaining you what happens next. But i'll try to figure out how to explain that you escape the small-people easely.

  1. And thank you again ! I actually struggled with this ennemy's design. Figuring out how to make it behave like the witch of the original story, not making it too powerfull and untouchable nor too fragile was difficult. I'm happy that you enjoyed the final draft :-)

Having now, finally (after a year break from board games) printed and played through it, I can say that the game design and the print quality are both excellent! Highly recommended epic journey through the Canadian north. I might be biased because I proofread, but it does seem really good.

I played this scenario this morning and it's very cool. It's ambitious and looks great.

My one criticism would be to make the movement and location connections more clear, as this felt massively confusing until we stumbled and bumbled our way to the end of the scenario.

If I understand the rules correctly, I'd say to work in the following clarifications.

  1. The river seems like you can only move along it via the actions on the cards. It doesn't function like other location cards. The movement actions on the River cards are the only way to move from one River to location to another.

  2. Many locations cannot be revealed unless specified by a card effect. This is actually clarified the text on the cards, unless you encounter the Taiga first (which we did) which is the least clear location as it mentions being connected to the location to its North, but you can only move to locations via the card text as long as they're revealed, as I understand it now. All the other locations will be revealed by events from OTHER cards. It might be more clear to just explicitly say you can't move to them at all until another card reveals them. Or, on the unrevealed side, say "you may not enter this location yet."

Reply

vinn_quest · 2020-05-12

Hi, Justin, thanks for the comment ! I'll take this in consideration for the next version of the scenario that i'm planning to do this summer. Espacialy the location reveal mecanism, i'll probably fix it the way you propose. Cheers !

Reply

Stevan · 2020-03-03

This scenario is awesome, well written and a blast to play. My only complaint is that the encounters that attached to locations or just increased difficulty for the following round were a bit too plentiful and cleared easily. This got in the way of seeing some of the more unique interactions like deer/skinwalker etc. I think why I play again I will remove 1 of each of those encounter cards and change the clear condition on the attach cards to clear on an elder sign through 0 rather than 'not a symbol'.

I emailed their customer service to ask if I could order your scenario thru the UK site, but apparently user-made content can't be ordered across their own sister sites :-( If it is easy, it would be great for British/Euro fans to save a fortune on shipping/import charges! Many thanks.

The Charlie Foxtail choice #1 reads oddly... if I am reading it correctly I should remove from the game an agenda or act that advances which advances. This has an odd interaction with agenda 2b. Do I put agenda 2b into play or remove it from the game and record the natives are after me?

Thanks for the clarification

Reply

vinn_quest · 2020-05-12

Hi and sorry for the late reply. "remove that card from the game" should actually reads "remove Charlie foxtail's destiny from the game". We did that scenario tonight, it was very intesting! We, living in the cold Canada, it was funny to us to see the folklore references to indians and the Mounties, but that was fine. This is a scenario with very a lot going on. We definitely appreciated the multiple side-quests in it, which made the whole thing very enjoyable and full of surprises.

We did manage to succeed the senario very well, and were surprised by the generosity of the rewards. That would probably be my only criticism of the scenario; we understand that it is brutal, and we could have paid a hefty price for failing it, but the upper ceiling in term of Victory Points is above other FFG's scenarios. I do find sad that the rewards for the official scenarios are often laughable, and make these scenarios not worth playing in a campaign. But the Wendigo was maybe a little bit too generous.

So in concusion, a fascinating story, a very exciting and dynamic game play, original mechanics that totally makes sense with the theme, but consequences that are maybe a little bit too generous for a side-scenario. Strongly recommended!

Hi and thank you for your comment ! I'm glad canadian people could enjoy it :-) During the playtest, the XP was to few for some, too much for other just like you say in your comment, it was pretty hard to balance it, knowing many failed the scenario or had to flee the hanninah valley to soon to gain enought XP. Maybe i'll fix it in the next version of the scenario. Cheers !

My friends and I had a really good time with this scenario when we played it two weeks ago. I would play it again. The custom investigators worked well.

Question on the Seeker's mechanic is the intention that if you fail and draw cards off your deck to commit that you draw your weaknesses or are you meant to just reveal cards and commit the ones you can?

First, beautiful work. I just printed my copy and I’m excited to cut it out and play it.

I have crafted many print and play card games, but yours was my first Arkham Central package. I don’t know if this is common on this site, but I don’t generally see print and play games where card backs and fronts are on the same page. Usually the fronts are all side by side on one sheet and the card backs are on the next page of the pdf. That way I can print double sided and use half as much paper. Usually it goes odd number pages are fronts and even numbered pages are backs.

Doing it side by side instead means twice as much paper, twice as much cutting and it also means I have no choice but to sleeve them to make them work as cards, and I don’t have my store bought cards in sleeves. Any thoughts on all that? Is there a reason to do it this way? Maybe something I don’t know about it yet?

Thanks for your great work! Look forward to playing it.

Reply

David · 2020-08-01

Home printers are usually not precise enough to print front and back on both side of the page with a perfect alignment. With the front and back on the same side you get a perfect alignment when you fold the page. Most people print on standard paper and sleeve the cards with an unused card in between to get a similar stiffness as normal cards.

This adventure is great, and for my money, better than the Hotel, Rougarou, and Guardians of the Abyss. I quite liked Carnavale, and would say it's easily its equal or better. Cheers friend, in my opinion this is better than professionally crafted adventures from FFG.

our first player made scenario and we enjoyed it very much. Question - Terryfying visions card, if you fail the reveal test does it stay in your threat area (forever?). Also in terms of balance - we didn't have particularly good at books characters so struggled with the clue locations being 3's and 4's (it felt the whole thing would have been (much) easier had I brought daisy, especially with clues being so core to progression. of course, when enemies appeared we were able to put them down.

Reply

vinn_quest · 2021-02-17

Hi Andrew, i'm happy you have enjoyed this scenario !

  • yes, Terryfing visions stays in your threat area, unless you have solutions like Alter Fate.
  • This scenario is intended to be played with investigators with some xp cards. If you have a balanced group it's better as well, but that's the case for almost every scenario, official or not...

Reply

Andrew Miller · 2021-02-20

We gave the characters the 9 exp as per the rulebook to boost them a little, as it turned out we didn't build for clues but did defeat the enemies with relative ease. Terrifying visions was a harsh card for a scenario with ao many animals and the no chance to get rid of it was annoying, usually, even the harshest of weaknesses have a way to overcome the effects.

Reply

Dragonrider1212 · 2021-03-07

This is a polished design with some interesting mechanical ideas. The writing however, left something to be desired. Much of the writing could use a copy editing pass and the description of the local indigenous people as savage, angry, and uncivilized felt dated at best, racist at worst. There's also not much in the way of spooky stuff going on in this scenario until very late in the game. And you only see the titular wendigo if you do poorly on the clue gathering. Many of the encounter cards simply feature wildlife or local people.

Reply

Count-Zero · 2024-11-14

Any chance the writing/editing might get updated? I think the artwork/design are great, but I'm with Dragonrider - the writing is, to be honest, racist. I live just west of the Rockies in Canada and am indigenous myself and was pretty astonished at the language used.

We played this mission with 4 investigators as part of a NotZ+side missions run. It was a fun mission, but I think it was let down in some places by the translation and some overly complex additional mechanics. I notice that the version we played on Tabletop Simulator was a little out of date compared to the one here, including some additional ambiguities. I have taken most of this into account. Information gets increasingly spoilery as we go:

There are some translation artifacts which mess with comprehension a lot. In particular, several keywords (e.g. Group limit, record/remember) haven't been translated perfectly, which lead to confusion (since you're not sure if you should be treating the effect by the keyword or not). The mission introduces a new mechanic to simulate a new type of movement -- honestly, this mechanic seems convoluted for what it is trying to achieve. The mission is definitely on the longer side of things. The mission is on the harder side of things with some unavoidable damage if your team doesn't have sustain or mitigation. The mission has quite a large amount of branching in the things that can happen and resolutions, and the punishment for failing is quite severe, which I like in a side mission (too many of them just give you free stuff!). The rewards are not too large, but give permanent assets that at least one investigator in your team will always be happy with.

The mission definitely favours characters with sufficiently advanced movement tricks (we had a Luke), as well as clue-heavy decks. There are ways to bypass most enemies but not the fairly large clue requirements. Some of the choices are a little frustrating without knowing them in advance -- we lost part of the "perfect" victory because there's an effect that triggers when the agenda advances. Similarly you can be permanently locked out of part of the mission on a single bad draw, which feels very bad. The theme of the mission can be very good, but I didn't feel it did a good job of mounting suspense in the end. Most of the encounter deck is very tame, but there are some draws that are extremely brutal to certain specific deck builds.

The "perfect" ending requires waiting out the agenda deck, which was a little annoying. I feel like the Walk/Navigate action could have been made significantly simpler by making the river locations simply not be connected, and compressing the effect into a single Activate effect on each river. We had a look at the Guide asset and just decided to never use them -- it feels like the whole extra page of rules could have been avoided, which would have been a blessing in an already-long mission.

Hi ! Thank you for your review. Keep in mind this was my first scenario. I'll try to craft better scenarios in the future, and your comment will help me to achieve this.

NO SPOILER

Hi, we played it (2 players) and loved it ! Probably the best fanmade scenario we ever played !

It's really good in every aspect and would love to play it again in the future with friends as it seems to have good replayability !

The art is amazing and the rules and different endings great ! It's a great experience of a few hours and we love that kind of scenarios :)

Keep up the good work !

Enjoying it so far. How do we get into the mountain range? If we failed to get enough clues on it with tablets, the bottom forced text doesn't do anything because we can't get into the location.

Hi ! the first versions of the scenario had indeed this mecanism, that prevent you to get the "side quest" of the mountain range if you're not lucky. I thought it was a brillant idea when i designed the scenario, that gave futher replayability to the scenario. Of course, it turns out that this mecanism could be very frustating, and there is a good reason why there is not something simiar in anyone of the official scenario. So i fixed this issue in the lastest version of the scenario in the french version, and i intend to do the same for the english version soon.

The action Walk along the river have two arrows next to it. Does that mean that it cost two actions?

Reply

vinn_quest · 2021-10-16

Hi, yes, The number of "arrow" icons in the ability's cost determines how many actions the investigator is required to use for this activate action. 2 arrow icon = it cost 2 actions to trigger that ability. Vinn

A great experience, one I'll be revisiting for many campaigns to come. A couple notes as to what makes this one so exception; #1: Atmospheric. Every card, every treachery or enemy fits the theme. Some scenarios throw in cards that only somewhat fit or make little to no thematic sense just to fill out the encounter deck (looking at you Excelsior, and your odd treacheries, like poison gas out of nowhere), but every card you draw in Against the Wendigo really pulls you into the story. Even the deer, which just sit aloof on the sidelines, making you wonder why you'd bother attacking a harmless animal, until the Wendigo's visions start twisting your mind with madness... #2: Sidequests and variety: This is what separates a good sidequest from a bad one; what is drawing me back to play this again? Have I seen everything, or have I just scratched the surface? This is what makes The Blob that Ate Everything so repayable, as compared to, say, Carnevale of Horrors. And boy, is Against the Wendigo filled with replayability. Not only are the "big reveals" as to the fate of the students randomized to keep you guessing every time, but the side quests (such as the mountain) are also drawn from two potential options, so it is actually impossible to "see it all" in one go. Bonus points for the fact that you get time to complete the side quests near the end, and don't feel like you have to unnaturally stretch out the climax to complete that last mission. #3: Canada. Just kidding, but it is neat to see the Great White North get some spotlight. Full props to the creator for capturing the atmosphere right out of Runner of the Woods, or one of the other Great Stories of Canada, full of crashing rapids and impenetrable pine woods, filled with surly trappers and restless natives.

How do I print this? I've downloaded the .zip and opened up the "Scenario Cards.pdf" File. What size paper are they formatted for? And how am I supposed to cut to ensure that the cards line up double-sided correctly? Do I fold them over? Do they line up with cards on the next page? Just want to make sure I do this properly

Is it intentional that the Knowledge of the Cold check will most likely instakill someone with an autofail or a high negative on the third test? The test is difficuly 4 base and if you hit the autofail, that is 4 horror instantly since the test gives horror "for each point you fail by"

Reply

Kethran · 2023-09-28

Also, is it intended that you can run circles around the Wendigo forever? He only ever pursues one location, even after the last stage of the agenda is in play. Which essentially gives you infinite time to complete the Acts

3 of our players played through this scenario last night while our 4th was away traveling. We absolutely loved it. The sense of place and the story were excellent. There is a lot of variability in the scenario and we, with decks that had only gained 6 XP so far, were pressing hard just to meet the scenario requirements; so there are quite a few things we didn't get to look at even a little bit. But don't let this statement make you think this is an un-balanced scenario, it is extremely well made and must have been play tested a fair ammount.

We all loved it. The player who was running a Runic Axe deck, was delighted with the story asset she got to add to her deck. And the XP earned, while not exhorbitant was at least more then what we payed to jump in to it.

Thank to the creator and playtesters of this scenario. It is just amazing.

Wow, just wow. I just finished my second playthrough and was able to get to R2 with Nat Cho and Winnifred. The first time I was impressed, this time I was completely amazed! It makes me kinda sad that it's sooo expensive to have the cards nicely printed for this type of awesome fan made stuff :/ any suggestions?
