Typos and bad art, needs improvement. Writing also too generic.

Monday -> prove useful to finding those you heard of last night -> Wait, what? What is the intent here? Weak's End -> Week's End extravegant -> extravagant a with a -> with a

1B the "and they seem to be warming to you" seems to refer to the acquaintances but grammatically it refers to a plural where the last (madness) was singular. Feels off. 2a - and apparently many others -> what? Also the mafia reference feels out of place. How would the investigator know this? 2B - lovers' -> remove the s. 3B - Crowley's -> remove ' , it is a plural. 4B - wil never -> will never

Thanks for the corrections, though weak’s end is intentional. I quite like the art personally.

The art looks good to me. It's different than the usual arkham style, which doesn't mean it's bad...

ok suspected as much. Has it been fixed?

Loved the atmosphere of this scenario, and the way you turned normally good stuff on its head - a lot of resources can be a problem, etc. Overall, my group of 4 loved the campaign and we plan to play it again. The only issue we had was that the final 'boss' was a bit of a pushover - we had most of the scenario to buff up without much real threat, then when everything changed, we just defended while he eliminated the other enemies, and let him have it. The wording of the final situation was such that we stopped drawing encounter cards; was this the intent?

Reply

Mjgrenier · 2020-04-26

Yes, but it’s largely for thematic reasons. The idea of drawing cards that reference partying at the beach didn’t jive with the feeling of the ending to me. I’m open to rebalancing though.

I agree the boss can be anticlimactic, but that’s been my experiences with bosses in this game in total. Maybe some number changes are in order? If you’re on discord you can hit me up at mjgrenier#2664, I’d be interested in talking about your experience if you want. On Reddit too with the same username.

Printed out the content, found more typos. If I made a list would you be willing to update?

Reply

Mjgrenier · 2020-04-28

It’d be helpful I suppose. If you’re on Reddit or discord, hit me up there. Not sure how quickly I can get to changing it.

How could I find you on reddit? Anyway, in the hope you get to read this, here goes.

  1. A lot of cards have duplicates, it might be amusing if you made some of the encounters with small variations in stats, instead of a 2/2/4 witch a 1/3/4 witch or such.

CoA errata (fluff text is mostly extremely abbreviated US style requiring to re-read each card multiple times in order to grasp what it tries to say)

  1. Casino de monte carlo: for going on a century now -> incorrect grammar - remove going.

  2. The Cove: place to get... and find -> and to find

  3. The Grand Hotel: hotal -> hotel provided you grease a few palms -> seems to refer to those of dinner, but semantically would refer to hotel staff. Sentence is too long.

  4. The Marina: rephrase. wished to fulfill -> or add a semicolon to separate.

  5. The Promenade if the "chapel of chance" is a synonym for the casino, it should stand out more. IF it is a key (unique) location it should be capitalized.

  6. The track .. and prove -> and to prove.

  7. difficulty card missing the easy/normal and hard sides. Please add also a back side if you don't wish to provide the conventional sides.

  8. The Beach

  • "for each point succeed by" unclear what you mean, rephrase. Perhaps each point over the threshold? or add you -> you succeed by..
  • spending to get +2 to the test should be decided before peforming the test, so the text should start with this logically.
  1. The Grand Hotel fluff text should be smaller in font size, compare to The Track for example.

  2. The Cove fluff text should be smaller.

  3. The Track -> unclear what Limit once per act refers to. To the test or to the fail. please rephrase.

  4. The Promenade -> similarly unclear fluff text might be better this, that, that.

  5. Bottoms up. if you fail by 1, discard 1 from hand. if you fail by 2, take one horror instead? or discard and additionally take 1 horror? what if you draw the autofail token?

  6. La Dolce Vita -> make fluff text smaller

  7. A Sea of Faces best to keep {book}(3) together

  8. Suspicion gain surge -> gains Surge. (the card gains Surge, not you) the location furthest, might be 2+, perhaps a location furthest is more correct.

  9. Claudia Morgan

  • Is she not "Riviera. Ally"? "Assets cost you 2 fewer resources to play" - I don't understand how this works. For everyone? at the location?
  1. Yvette Andrews return to your location -> return her to your location. 1 horror for every 2 event cards - rounded up makes no sense here. if i have 2 cards, it is 1 horror. if i have 3 cards, it is 1 horror. If you want 2 horror on 3 cards, rephrase to take half the #horror on #cards, rounded up.

  2. Siren's call discard this card -> discard Siren's Call.

  • that do not control.. get +1 -> unclear if that is good or bad. I guess not control -> test is increased by 1?
  1. Black Market Trader Is this an intended duplicate? same for Bottoms Up, La Dolce Vita, Siren's Call.

  2. Bottoms Up duplicate?

  3. Entrancing Dancer: Spawn should probably end with a dot. not sure if the term fight in +2 fight is correct. Isn't it "combat"?

  4. The Sun Beats Down: peril needs a dot, similar to Hunter. doom should be capitalized? agenda should be capitalized. fluff: burnt? the proper writing is burned, isn't it? burnt is present perfect. I have the book, in English, but I don't recall that quote btw.

  5. Monty Harrington add a dot.

  6. Lorenzo Alfieri suceed -> succeed. . and return him -> . Then return him

  7. The Parkers at The Parkers's location -> at the Parkers' location (but English/US might disagree on the 's).

  8. Friendship's Fee gain surge -> gains Surge.

  9. Act 3B: Aleister Crowley's -> their refers to plural -> Aleister Crowleys.

  10. Act 2B: on to a small -> on? -> over to their small drunkneness -> drunkenness (in 30s it might be called inebriation) into play the set-aside -> remove set-aside or set aside Cultist deck -> set-aside Cultist deck.

  11. Act 2B; seems like time well spent -> is, or feels like, but there is nothing seems about it after experiencing.

  12. Agenda 4B: wil -> will

  13. Act 2a: act should be capitalized. upkeep phase probably too.

  14. Agenda 2a: Dresses of Unusual --> shouted language is never capitalized; probably needs quotes -> "Dresses of unusual .." if you're wanting to meet new faces -> might benefit rework

  15. Agenda 4a any answers from them -> refers to the latecomers but should refer to the bored socialites?

  16. Agenda 2a traumatic nature is an odd phrasing. experiences can result in trauma but nature rarely does. accompanied by -> associated with

  17. Agenda 2b: begin to get to your head -> begin getting to your head -> or better: start to get to your head.

is seeking .. and are making their way to the hotel bar -> feels odd. suggest to remove the and..bar.

(please don't get me wrong, I admire the work, so don't take it personally, but after correcting the above, the sentences might use some polishing. Too much ing-form, and language is a bit modern for the 1930s.)

A little confused...I d/l this adventure and looked at the Campaign Guide. It started with Scenario 4 and it was on page 18 and went to 22. Did I not get the first part of the Guide?

Reply

Mjgrenier · 2020-05-03

It’s part 4 of a campaign, the first 3 parts are in the Bread and Circuses campaign page on here. I’m going to submit an updated file (just text changes, no gameplay updates as of yet) in the next few days and I’ll ask to have the two pages consolidated.

Just finished this one. I loved everything about it up until the final agenda. Had a few concerns (keep in mind I was playing the TTS version and at this point I'm not sure if it is most up to date since it has been removed or something? But I still have it saved).

  1. I don't like that the mythos stop being pulled and there is no doom count on the final agenda. It is too easy as you can honestly just sit somewhere until you have your best cards and then go clean house. This is especially true if you have the Shallows of Lunacy version of the final act as the monster is funny but not hard (I liked this, but in combo with the weak cultists, mostly their 2 health, it was very easy at that point). Having encounters would make this more difficult. Maybe only remove the encounters that don't make sense? We also had all the available Riviera allies out already, so there was no 'cultist' deck (they just switched from allies to cultists and were either engaged with us or at locations we were not at). This brings me to point 2.

  2. In the TTS version, the cove is connected to the hotel and is one-way. There is a connector next to the marina which implies the cove should be connected to that location, but the connections are listed wrong on the cards if that is the case. Because it is a one-way the way it is now, the cultists that are NOT at the cove, ie any that were spawned and not under your control when going to the last agenda/act, will not hunt because there is no path that will bring them closer to you until you leave the cove. In our situation, with no doom pressure or mythos and no remaining cultists, we finished off the 1 cultist and easy deep one and then had an infinite amount of turns to just draw cards until we had our biggest guns. Probably not what you intended as there is a huge loss of tension. I would at the very least leave a doom threshold.

  3. The easy form of the last monster is not traited as a monster (just deep one). This means you don't have to kill it to advance the last act technically, which also does not make a lot of sense with the text when you do advance it. We killed it anyway, but noted that we didn't HAVE to.

  4. The order of the items noted on the act that puts out the cultists/cove and new acts/agendas actually does not work correctly in the order listed. The Solar Ray, for instance, would never enter play since regardless of whether you have 'received the idol' or not you are instructed to advance to the next act before reaching that bullet that instructs you to place the Solar Ray. Similarly, the text indicates to put the new agenda out before the act resolves meaning that you should read that agenda when you put it out before reading the new act. However, if you do this, the order of events story-wise are backward.

  5. I wasn't sure about the enemy that spawns at the Marina either. He makes it so you cannot trigger actions or reactions on cards 'at his location or adjacent locations.' Is this intended to make it so you cannot fight him with weapons? Those are technically actions on cards at his location or an adjacent location. I THINK the intent was to prevent you from using the location and riviera ally abilities specifically, but as it is worded now, I'm pretty sure it also prevents you from triggering the abilities on any treacheries or on your own assets if you are in his vicinity. If that was the intent, that's fine but I was trying to think of a thematic reason for why.

  6. Lastly, this is something I'm not sure was an actual error. We got the Shallows of Lunacy final act, as we were never told to record that we 'received the strange idol.' However, we actually DID have it in one of our decks. We were given it in the first scenario or second even though we took the guy we were looking for home. It stated he had slipped it into our pocket during the cab ride, but we were never told to RECORD that we received it. Not recording this may have been intentional, but as we've only played through once, I'm not sure. It was just odd because we HAD the idol, but the scenario acted as if we didn't. But maybe we just didn't know enough about story-wise due to our initial choices?

Overall, still very very fun, and I love how much personality the cards carry in their mechanics alone. For this particular scenario, however, I wish the ending didn't feel so easy as it was a little anti-climactic. Even if you find out that the cultists are bumbling amateurs (so you know, supposed to be a bit on the easy side), it's still too easy in my opinion when they only have 2 health if you have anyone at all with a weapon. The tension just evaporates. The hardest part was getting the invite to the campfire to begin with.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of this and am mulling over how to fix this. I’ve got a few ideas, but am also going back and correcting text on the other 3 scenarios, so hopefully in the next week I’ll release an updated version.

The keyword info is useful, so I’ll go back and look at that stuff as well.

Your feedback has been pretty helpful overall, so I’d love to chat about it if you find a second. I’ve listed my contact info in other replies on here, so hit me up if you get a chance.

I'm never opposed to a back-and-forth if you'd like, and we really enjoy your creations, but I'm sadly less available than I'd like to be. I don't have an active reddit or discord. I'm open to email or messaging at my BGG account https://boardgamegeek.com/user/soakman though if you have one.

I didn't know. So I need Bread and Circuses and Enter the Dragon first.. and bon voyage. You might consider adding a - part 4 - or similar on the front of the book.. Note to self: /bread-circuses-fan-created-content-arkham-horror-lcg/ (that page might also need to be updated to link to this part, part 4)

I've played all the scenarios released so far (four). I must say that the first two scenarios were as interesting as the plot as they were particular to play.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the third and fourth scenarios. In both I noticed much less care, both in the story (which is totally lost compared to the beginning in the opinion of my game group), and in the gameplay. Not only did you lose the air of "criminal organization" and intrigue that you could breathe in the first two, but the gameplay seems to have been "shaken up", as if it was done in a hurry. Some encounter cards have a text that should be reviewed, as it seemed obvious that they don't work as expected (same thing for the monsters with "Prey", an instruction that by the way is explained in the fourth scenario instead of the third, where it appears for the first time).

It’s part of what’s listed as Bread and Circuses Campaign on here. The campaign is more or less on indefinite hold, but my writing partner recently is more available so there’s a possibility I go back to work on it.

Hi, the scenatio guide starts at (implicit) page 18, shouldn't that be page 1? Or is it the conclusion of another campaign? If so, which one?

This is the fourth scenario of a campaign. It follows the 3 in Bread and Circuses. The files on here are the most up to date one’s I’ve published.

Any chance of getting the cost of azure campaign guide uploaded again? File seems to be corrupted. Can’t open it.
