Dark Matter, a deep space scifi horror campaign and spiritual sequel to the Path to Carcosa. For more information, check out this article: https://mysteriouschanting.wordpress.com/2020/10/17/dark-matter-campaign/

In a not too distant future, humanity has begun travelling to the other planets of the solar system, searching for a new haven, and escaping the tendrils of what had happened on Earth. A cacophony of decay and madness is spreading throughout the solar system, from the distant echo of distress beacons, to the mysterious signals originating from the strange moons of Saturn and beyond. This future holds many secrets, and not everything may be as it seems – including your own memories.

Hey all! The current version as of this comment (3rd May 2021) is the pre-final release! Which means there will only be slight mechanical changes and typos to fix before the final release. So this is the chance to catch typos! Feel free to contact me on discord at #Axolotl4672 or comment feedback below.

I will be making a comment below when the final release has been posted! (ETA 1-3 months)

Pre-final Release Errata - In Scenario 5 (Fragment of Carcosa). One of the locations has wrong location icons and connection icons - should look like this instead!

Sorry about that PnP players, will be fixed in final release!

The Final Release has been posted! There won't be any significant changes to cards anymore! Enjoy!

This is a really good campaign, better than some of the official ones. I can't recommend this enough.

So far we only played the first scenario, but it's already great! The amount of work that must have gone into this massive campaign is insane! If there's a way to support you financially (patreon or other), both regarding this and possible future campaigns, please let me know, you've definitely earned it!

We didn't find any typos, however we noticed that resolving the final agenda (i.e. failing the scenario) incorrectly promts you to read resolution 1. Minor error, but probably should be fixed in the final version.

Looking forward to playing more!

Woo thanks for playing! I appreciate the offer, but there's no need for financial support! If you'd like to help, spreading word of mouth and letting people know that fan-content exists is always helpful for all creators!

Thanks for the note! The agenda will be fixed in final release, apparently not a lot of people got there during earlier playtesting so it never caught my attention. :p I'm gonna need to double check all the failure states now haha

Hope you enjoy the rest of the campaign!

Fun campaign! I felt the campaign was too generous with the amount of XP given in certain scenarios though.

Reply

Axolotl · 2021-06-16

Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Still tweaking some XP balance throughout for final release - though I'd rather people think it's too much XP than not enough :p

Greetings!

Just making sure I understand the status of this campaign; are there any other substantial updates coming? Looking to print it via this link (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2662814/axolotls-dark-matter-custom-campaign-and-symphony), but it is one of the more expensive PnPs out there, so I just thought I would check in first.

Thanks in advance for designing what I hear is an amazing campaign!

Hi, thanks for the interest! The current version as of June 22nd (and the one on that link) is still the Pre-final version, and I'm planning on making one last update to clean up all the typos and a balance pass.

ETA 1 or 2 months, still waiting to collect more feedback and typos.

The current version is still very playable, but if you want a version that will no longer be updated, it is the next one!

Got it. Thanks for the quick reply! Just because of the cost of printing, I'll probably wait on the final version. This will make for a good run through after we finish Innsmouth and Return to TCU.

Thanks for the awesome content though!

Hi, First, I’m excited to try this campaign. Live the horror/sci-fi combo. Also, I’m new to this fan-made content thing. I did one other one (Against The Wendigo) by just printing on glossy photo paper, cutting them out and sleeving them so the size/corners worked with my standard Arkham cards. It worked well, but was VERY time consuming. I keep seeing people refer to custom card printing services on this site. Is there a tutorial/guide on this process you could point me to? All the options are kind of overwhelming. I want to know which size to use, which paper, which is the best service, etc. thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hi! I've never personally used them but I know most people use something like MakePlayingCards and PrinterStudio to have professionally printed cards ready. Here's a link of MakePlayingCards projects that someone compiled for a bunch of different fan content - including the pre-final Dark Matter! https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2661759/professionally-printed-cards-ffg-custom-made-conte I can't comment on quality or the pros and cons of different services - I wish there was a guide for this process too! Hope this helps!

For what its worth, I've used both MPC and Printer studio. The interface for both is similar. Feels a little clunky, but gets the job done. Personally, I like the quality of Printer Studio slightly better b/c I felt the color fidelity was a smidge better. Both sites are good though, and similar in production.

Prices run similarly. It can be expensive, but I personally prefer the tactile nature of physical cards.

As an FYI, neither option includes cards that are exactly the same size as the official Arkham cards. The size is close enough, that I don't find it too bothersome. For player cards, I sleeve anyway, and you can't tell the difference then.

I'm very excited to give this a whirl. Had it printed using a print file someone else supplied for my birthday. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it looks like an absolute blast.

So far, this campaign is great. I do have one question: does cybervirus stay in the player's deck endlessly (unless something says to remove it?). If so, it's a pretty sweet weakness potentially letting you net and extra xp each scenario.

Playing my blind playthrough with Edmund Moore (a homebrew boy street urchin Sheldon Gang member) and Wendy. They felt so at home with PS-187, hah!

Reply

James Lederer · 2023-04-28

It's added to your hand rather than to your deck, so I removed cybervirus after the scenario ended.

I played the entirety of this campaign in OCTGN. It's now my favorite AHTCG campaign. I like it better than the official campaigns.

Can you send me image packs for OCTGN anywhere? I'm trying to find it

My sweetheart and I finished this campaign yesterday (blind run with Rita Young and Jacquline Fine). First, I was skeptical. I was worried that the Sci-Fi setting might break the immersion. Oh boy, I was so wrong. This campaign makes so many things right; the four biggest ones are:

a) The characters are woven into this story in a way that purging a board computer from a virus while being dressed in golden twenties style cloths works absolutely fine.

b) Exploration is fun: There is the scanning ability that makes exploration more comprehensive. Moreover, sometimes exploration is the key to solving an act rather than just the means for getting more clues (as it is in most official campaigns). Also, the structure of the campaign feels like you are exploring space.

c) What you do matters; I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil anybody, but in the end, everything we did had consequences. At the same time, the finale is beatable even if you messed up most of the previous investigations (and yeah, we know, because we messed up a lot ^^).

d) The love for details that the developer put into this campaign: We were constantly impressed by how much work had been put into detail, and you can see that the developer cared deeply for creating an immersive campaign. The artwork is carefully chosen to fit the theme and be coherent at the same time. The flavor texts are really well written or chosen from existing excerpts. Every now and then, the developer introduces new mechanics, and we were baffled how well these new mechanics work and how well they fit into the framework of Arkham LCG. Also, the new encounter cards introduce new ideas rather than using existing ideas and just tweaking them a bit.

Overall, we had a blast with this campaign, and we really love this campaign a lot. We are thankful for all the work that went into creating this awesome campaign. Thanks a lot! We will clearly come back to this again in the future. :)

The campaign is excellent and Axolotl deserves all kinds of praise. I am currently going through my 3rd run and I am appreciating it now more than the first one. At first I thought that sci-fi was a weird choice to set an AH story in, but recently things have clicked in me and I fully understand why it makes sense. For this is a great virtue of Dark Matter: the writing is brilliant and it unfolds slowly with the replays. This is not an amateur game design or amateur writing, this work matches the standards of the official material, and I am even tempted to say that I can count "Dark matter" into my 3 favourite campaigns. What the heck, I am going to say it: this is one of my top 3 campaigns. My only criticism is that the scenarios are a bit too generous in providing VP. I have got 29 VP in the first 3 scenarios when I am averaging 15 for the same amount of scenarios in the official stuff. Worth mentioning that after these first three, VP are not so easy to get anymore. Thanks Axolotl, this is fantastic, fantastic work!

Had a lot of fun playing this campaign on Steam. Was thinking about getting it printed. Is there an error/issue with the picture for the 2nd and 3rd copies of Solar Flare in the Hastur's Gaze encounter set? I was looking through the images and noticed that those two seem off at the top of the card.

Creed · 2023-08-12

Anyone know if this is the final release version? I want to wait for the final version before having it printed.

Reply

Juniorg · 2023-10-27

Does it need for Arkham horror lcg official encounter sets cards?

Reply

Rainey · 2023-10-28

Yes, there are times that you will use encounter sets from the core set as well as some cards from the Carcosa campaign.

Reply

Fastjoe · 2023-10-28

One of the best campaigns. In some ways better than the official campaigns.
